Briggs is in a bit of a haze as he is trying to figure out his future. Even though Briggs felt he was forced and had no choice he went to EFY in Nauvoo this year. He ended up having a really good time and he was thankful he went.
Briggs is obsessed with getting a car. Not just any car, it has to be fixed up to be a really fast/ powerful race car. We have been trying to discourage his car pursuits but despite our counsel he was determined to get a car. He finally found a 1995 Acura with all kinds of additions. He drove down to Las Vegas to buy the car from a plane engineer at Nelis Air Force base. Supposably there was only about 30,000 miles on a new engine and everything is in pristine condition. Briggs decided he could do this all on his own and he was doing this no matter what.
He said he test drove the car before handing over the money but on his way to (Noah his friend when with him) Noahs grandmas house to stay there for the night, suddenly the car started rattling and making a noise that it shouldn't make.
He called us, distraught. As he should be because the engine is bad. Adam had to take a trailer down to Vegas so they could bring the car back up. Briggs has now owned the car for two months. It is still in the shop with no end in sight. A car that was already priced 4x the Blue book value because it had so many "great features." Will end up being at least 5x the the blue book value before he will even get a chance to drive it.
Due to the absurdly overpriced cost of the car, the only way he could get a loan is if he took out a loan from us. Anyway, this is and will continue to be an expensive mistake that is costing all of us.
Luckily Briggs is working full time for Adam. Unfortunately, it is grunt work on a construction site so Briggs is working really hard and doesn't seemed to be finding a lot of happiness right now.
We have attended many mission farewells this summer. Briggs is getting into a place in life that is quite lonely. Adam and I are doing all we can can to try to support Briggs but he is trying so hard to be independent and make his own choices. Sometimes I think he is choosing the opposite of what we say, even if he knows it will hurt him, just so he can be independent. Sigh.

This is a really touchy time for sure.
ReplyDeleteReading about his car experience reminded me so much of the Black Widow that Mike bought. It's really hard watching your kids make some of those choices, but hopefully it will set him on a better path for the rest of his life.
ReplyDeleteSo hard when your kids don't make the best choices. Those choices even though it's hard on everyone can become such a learning experience. Hopefully it turns out to be a good learning lesson for him.
